Reading Tip of the Week

Picture This!

During your next outing or gathering, take action-packed photos, then have your child create captions to go with each picture. Assemble the pictures and captions in a picture book or album, and add speech and thought bubbles to create a personalized – and probably hysterical -- graphic novel.

READING TIP OF THE WEEK

Reading Aloud With Your Child-- 5 Easy Tips
Reading stories to your child is a valuable activity.  Many experts in the field of reading have determined that parents who read to their children on a regular basis are more likely to have children who are good readers.

1. Give your child plenty of opportunities to choose reading materials you read together.  Let him or her pick books based on special interests or hobbies.

2. Read aloud with lots of expression.   You may want to take on the role of one of the characters in a book and adjust your voice accordingly.

3.  Encourage your child to stop and ask lots of questions or to point out details in the book.  This shows that your child is interested in what you are reading.

4.  You may want to stop from time to time in your reading to ask your child questions about some of the characters or events in the story.

5.  Make reading a regular part of your family activities.  Be sure to take books along on family outings and trips.  Read to your child every chance you get.
